Pipeline

BLACKstage will be producing Pipeline by Dominique Morisseau in winter of 2023. This work explores systemic racism in education systems and the school-to-prison pipeline that traps underprivileged youth in cycles of crime and poverty. Omari, a Black student, is villainized by teachers who cannot and do not seek to understand him and limit his potential to stereotypes. Confronting the way that Black learners are misserved by United States public and private education systems is an urgent conversation, and one that Morisseau allows us to have by humanizing the struggles of one Black family. The play intertwines economic inequities, educational injustice, and familial stresses, even featuring styles of poetry that use graffiti art to represent and honor hood culture.

Cinderella

Inspired by the 1997 teleplay starring Brandy and Whitney Houston, Cinderella (Enchanted Edition) tells the story of a young woman forced into a life of servitude by her cruel stepmother and self-centered stepsisters, who dreams of a better life. With the help of her fairy godmother, Cinderella is transformed into a princess and finds her prince. As adapted for the stage, with great warmth and more than a touch of hilarity, this romantic fairy tale still warms the hearts of children and adults alike.
